Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël, two ancient Roman coastal towns of origin, are located next to each other and are therefore always mentioned in one breath. Today it is a popular holiday destination for families with children because of its beautiful sandy beaches, lively promenades and festivities in the summer. Due to its location (between St Tropez and Cannes and the Esterel mountains), Frejus-Saint-Raphaël is also a very good starting point for day trips, bike rides and walks. Especially in Fréjus you can find many remains of the Roman era. Visit the small coastal towns Anthéor, Le Trayas and Agay as well.
Fréjus
The old Roman town of Fréjus has beautiful natural surroundings. Its amphitheatre with arena, where Roman gladiators once fought, is now mainly an interesting tourist attraction. The town's greatest sight is La Cité Episcopale (the Bishops town), consisting of a medieval cathedral, a monastery as well as a baptismal chapel. During the summer many concerts are organized here. The aqueduct, the city walls and gates Porte des Gaules and Porte de Rome are also worth a visit.
Saint-Raphaël
Fréjus-Plage up to the marina Port Fréjus you can fin beautiful wide sandy beaches and a lively promenade. Also, Saint-Raphaël has a cozy, newly renovated harbor with a promenade lined with plane trees. From here you can sail to Saint Tropez with the ferry boat and there are nice trips organized at sea twice a day as well. The beach restaurants have terraces with sun loungers.
Harbours and water sports
With five different ports Fréjus-Saint-Raphaël is the ideal place for boat lovers. Do you like to rent a sailboat or motor yacht? Please contact the Club Nautique de Fréjus and the Yacht Club International de Saint-Raphaël. And of course you can enjoy the annual Regatta of Saint-Raphaël. And in Agay you can find a good diving school.
Children will find entertainment all along the lively boulevards. The largest amusement parks can be found at Fréjus, like Aqualand Fréjus and the Parc Zoologique de Fréjus.
Culinary delights in Fréjus and Saint-Raphael
The tourist restaurants on the coast are often less well than the restaurants in the center of Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël. Renowned restaurants, for example are L'Amandier in Fréjus and La Table in Saint-Raphaël. In Agay there are some nice restaurants at the beach as well. On the west side of the beach but still in the center of Agay is Maobi, a quiet restaurant with lovely loungers, a beautiful beach and good food. On the other side of the street you can eat at the cozy Coté Jardin. Opposite Maobi is a very good bakery and caterer.
Golf courses Fréjus-Saint-Raphaël
Near Fréjus-Saint-Raphaël you will find the 18-hole golf courses of Valescure, Golf Blue Green d'Estérel and Golf de Roquebrune. But also many other excellent golf courses are located less than 20 miles away, including Terre Blanche Golf de Saint Endréol, Golf de Sainte-Maxime and Beauvallon. And in Agay there are six very well maintained tennis courts.
Route Estérel-gebergte
From Fréjus-Saint-Raphaël you can drive the famous Route Corniche d'Or towards Cannes. This route is very worthwhile, drive through Agay-Plage, Anthéor and Le Trayas by the magnificent red Estérel Mountains. Stop along the way to have a nice swim in a Calanques. Or follow a trail, for example, the route that starts at Col de Belle Barbe or the route at the Cap Dramont.
Hike along the coast
Fun for kids (and adults too) is the journey of Agay to Saint-Raphaël along the coast. You walk right along the sea and over the rocks. There is a special route to do this in a harmless way. Everything is well signposted! Along the way you pass restaurant Le Tortue where life is good. Again, with a beautiful quiet beach and lovely loungers. From Agay in the direction of Valescure there are wonderful hiking trails in the mountains. The roads are fine (also for cycling) but if you like you can also enjoy the mountains in the uncharted areas. The trails are well marked and the sea views are really stunning.
