Port Grimaud is the outer and seaside resort of the southern French fortified town of Grimaud. The French architect François Spoerry realized this ambitious project of a town in the water in 1966. Protected against the wind from the east and the Mistral from the west, he developed the harbor town of Port Grimaud in the bay of Saint-Tropez. The town is built on lagoons and drained swamps.
The dream of François Spoerry, fanatical sailor, was to realize a holiday park where he could moor his boat right in front of the door of his holiday home. And his dream came true: Port Grimaud has no less than 15 kilometers of quays and almost all of the houses have their own berth at the door.
The houses in Port Grimaud are built in a simple style. The biggest difference between the houses is the height and the color of it. The bridges connect the different streets with each other. Because of the colorful Provençal houses, the bridges and the network of canals, Port Grimaud is also known as the Venice of France.
Port Grimaud is almost entirely car-free. Only residents and permit holders can pass the barrier. Tourists must use a parking lot opposite the main entrance of the town. At the entrance gate signs show you that you should dress neatly in Port Grimaud. And they take this very seriously, bare torsos are not tolerated on a terrace!
In a water-rich environment like Port Grimaud it goes without saying that there are many water sports possibilities. You can rent a boat at several places and you can rent jet skis and pedalos on the beach at Port Grimaud. There is also a lot of windsurfing, water skiing, paragliding, diving and snorkeling.
It is nice to visit the church of Port Grimaud, from the tower you have a beautiful view. Even the church tower of Saint-Tropez can be seen. At the church you can also rent a boat with which you can sail through the 'streets' of Port Grimaud. From the water you can really enjoy the atmosphere of this town with its colorful houses with boats on the doorstep.
A day on one of the two beaches of Port Grimaud is also recommended. The extensive sandy beaches are beautiful and clean. You can rent boats with which you can explore the entire coastline and swim and snorkel in shady bays and inlets. There are both public beaches and beach clubs, something for everyone.
Port Grimaud has many lively bars, cafes and restaurants with terraces right on the quay walls. Go eat good food and stay there until it gets dark. Port Grimaud is then illuminated by numerous lanterns and together with the lighting from the houses it gives a very romantic atmosphere. In short, Port Grimaud is recommended to visit during your holiday on the Côte d'Azur, the town gives you a real holiday feeling!
