The mainland of France is truly beautiful, but islands often have something special to offer and are certainly worth a visit. On the French Riviera you will find the island group Hyères and the largest island here is Porquerolles. This island is known for its beautiful beach, on the north side of the island. Porquerolles together with the islands of Île du Levant and Port-Cros form the so-called Îles d'Hyères or Îles d'Or. A paradise for cyclists and hikers.
Porquerolles is accessible all year round by ferry from Hyères at La Tour Fondue on the peninsula of Giens. In July and August there are also ferries from Toulon, Le Lavandou, Cavalaire, Bormes and La Londe. The crossing from Hyères takes about 25 minutes. With children it is nice to make the crossing by boat with transparent bottom, this boat only sails in the summer months.
As soon as you arrive in the port of Porquerolles you immediately experience the relaxed atmosphere. From the harbor you walk straight to the village where you will find a large square with a church as well as a number of shops. You will also find several cafes and restaurants where you can eat outside. But first you have to get active and discover the rest of the island!
Discovering Porquerolles is best done on foot or by bike. A walk to the lighthouse is an absolute must, in one and a half hours you are back and forth. You have a breathtaking panorama over the entire island, the azure sea, the sandy beaches, the fort Sainte Agathe and the steep cliffs in the south.
In the interior you will find a variety of vineyards, olive and fruit trees, a beautiful part that is ideal for exploring by bike. And what could be better to end the bike ride at the beautiful, pine-lined Plage Notre Dame? This vast and secluded sandy beach invites you to take a refreshing dip in the clear sea.
In the village of Porquerolles you will find typical Provençal houses richly overgrown with bougainvillea. They give a beautiful color accent to the street scene and also determine the atmosphere of the island. Porquerolles is a paradise for lovers of peace and nature. It is a varied island which is ideal for a stay of one or a few days.
In the summer months it can be very busy on Porquerolles. If you are here during this period, take one of the first boats to the island in order to avoid the crowds. If you have the chance to visit the island in the early or late season, then these are the ideal moments to enjoy all that this island has to offer.
It is nice to end your trip to Porquerolles with a lunch or dinner in the famous restaurant Le Mas de Langoustiers. Do not forget to book in advance!
